Kenny Chesney Produces Willie Nelson's Latest
What happens when a country/folk legend hires a contemporary country superstar to produce his new album? Well, country music fans can’t wait to find out—especially after Kenny Chesney whetted folks’ appetites by revealing a bit about what he and Willie Nelson have in store in a recent interview with CMA.
On being asked to produce the album, Chesney says, “The idea that (Willie Nelson would) call me about making a record with him, well, you just don't dream stuff like that…When he opens his mouth, there's just so much there, beyond the notes, even. He's one of the great American voices of all time, and he's someone I've listened to my whole life."
The new album will consist of Nelson doing renditions of popular music from some of America’s greatest songwriters, and the task of choosing material proved, for Chesney, an overwhelming one. Some songwriters to be represented include Guy Clark, Bob Dylan, Kris Kristofferson, Dave Matthews and Randy Newman.
"We had all the guys in the studio in a circle, and they were just so there," Chesney says. "This was Willie Nelson, singing some of the best American songwriters, and you could tell everyone was completely into it. Even Willie said it was the most fun he'd had in the studio. That made me proud."
