Avril Lavigne: Aspiring Actress & Manga Heroine
Avril learns that fighting off demons is easier than making it in Hollywood. The former “punk” teen princess, now 22, has chosen to take a break from music to pursue other ventures—acting and manga.
On the acting front, Avril has only signed on to two projects—the animated feature
Over the Hedge and ensemble flick
Fast Food Nation. Why just two? Well, according to Lavigne, it’s not for lack of offers:
"I decided a couple of years ago that I wanted to get into acting so I got a movie agent and thought that on my last year off I would have shot a whole bunch of movies, but I didn't because I've been reading scripts for two years and they've all been crap.
"I realized that I can't just decide, 'Hey, I want to act,' and then be in a wicked movie. It might be five years until I find the perfect film.
"So I have to be patient. I don't want it to be cheesy. I'm not going to do something till I read the script and go, 'Oh my God, this is it!' It really has to speak to me."
Apparantly what
did speak to her immediately was the opportunity to appear as a character in
MAKE 5 WISHES—a manga series published by Del Ray Manga. The story, which Avril also had a hand in creating, goes a bit something like this: a shy teenage girl, while surfing the web, comes across a mystical website and is granted a series of wishes by a nasty demon. When her choices go awry, the girl meets her hero, Avril Lavigne, who directs her on a path of self-empowerment, allowing her to conquer her “inner” demons. You get the picture.
Weeding out the crap roles and battling demons—just another day in the life of a pop-star turned actress turned manga mogul.
