The Return of Soul Diva Betty Davis
Betty Davis – the ‘70s funk and soul singer who’s influenced everyone from Miles Davis (her husband of one year) to Ice Cube – will now have the chance to spread her funky influence over a new generation thanks to Light in the Attic Records. The small, Seattle-based label is reissuing two Betty Davis classics, her 1973 debut,
Betty Davis, along with her 1974 follow-up album,
They Say I'm Different.
Though little is known about her personal life, Betty Davis’ music has made an undeniable impact on music history, paving the way for such female singers as Macy Gray, Madonna and Erykah Badu. During her brief marriage to Miles Davis, she introduced the jazz great to Jimi Hendrix and psychedelic rock, inspiring Miles Davis to record his classic album
Bitches Brew.
First released by Just Sunshine Records,
Betty Davis and
They Say I'm Different have been out of print since the ‘70s. Bootlegs made the rounds during the ‘80s and ’90s, preventing Davis from reaching a wider audience and receiving any royalties from her music. That will all change with Light in the Attic’s reissues. Re-mastered from the original master tapes, the reissues not only feature incredible sound quality, they also come packed with extras, including previously unreleased bonus tracks, photos and archival material, and new liner notes from Oliver Wang.
Sexy, passionate, bold – Davis proves herself to be just as revolutionary and unforgettable today as when she first burst onto the music scene over 30 years ago. Audio samples from
Betty Davis and
They Say I'm Different can be streamed on the label’s
website.
